is a genus of flowering plants native to South America from Brazil west to Peru
and south to southern Argentina (Chubut Province). Different authors accept
between four and 18 species in the genus. The woody trunk tends to be twisted
and the thin stem has sharp thorns and dark green leaves. Bougainvilleas can be
easily grown as a hedge, an arch or a tree on the ground and in pots.
